I was born in Ibadan, but my journey with Ogun State began in 1975 after my primary education when I moved to Akure.
A year after the state creation, in 1977, we returned to Abeokuta, the state capital, just after the state creation. I was filled with enthusiasm and curiosity, eager to explore this new city. During my secondary school days, I got to know the nooks and crannies of Abeokuta, traversing the Egba townships and listening to the rich history of the land. These experiences have been invaluable to me.
In June 1980, I landed my first job through the Deputy Governor, Chief Sesan Soluade, at the old Governor’s Office in Oke Ilewo, Abeokuta. I was part of the Ogun State Civil Service, under the Ministry of Home Affairs, led by Commissioner Dr. Akinola.
At this juncture I must acknowledge Aiyekoto the first civilian governor, late Chief Olabisi Onabanjo under the Unity Party of Nigeria and ably led by the sage himself, another Ogun state personality, Chief Obafemi Awolowo of sweet political memories.
The ministry of home affairs was vast, with departments that would later become standalone ministries, including Information, Community Development, Fire Service, Forestry, Social Welfare, Arts and Culture, Government Press, and the Ten Local Government Areas. Most are fulfledged ministries with many departments under them.
After just six months in the civil service, I joined NTV Abeokuta at Ogbe in 1980 as one of its pioneer staff. The station was founded in 1979 and was a testament to the state’s growth and development.
I’m proud to celebrate Ogun State’s 50th birthday, and I’m grateful for the experiences that have shaped me into who I am today.
