In a vast desert, two travelers, Lies and Untruths, journeyed through the dunes of deception. Both seemed to lead people astray, but their paths diverged like two distinct oases.
Lies was a cunning guide, intentionally misleading others for personal gain or malice. He would fabricate stories and present them as facts, knowing full well that they were false. Lies would manipulate and deceive, causing harm to those who trusted him.
Untruths, on the other hand, was a misguided traveller, often spreading false information without realising it. He might believe something to be true, only to discover later that it was not. Untruths would share his misconceptions, not out of malice, but out of ignorance or misunderstanding.
One day, a young traveller approached Lies and asked for directions to a nearby city. Lies pointed him in the wrong direction, laughing to himself as the traveller wandered further into the desert. The young traveller became lost and frustrated, realising too late that he had been deceived.
Meanwhile, another traveller approached Untruths and asked for information about the same city. Untruths shared what he thought was true, but it turned out to be an untruth. The traveller was misinformed, but Untruths apologised and corrected his mistake as soon as he realised the error.
A wise elder observed the two travellers and their interactions. He explained to the young travellers that Lies and Untruths were distinct, despite both leading people astray. “Lies are like a mirage created by a deceitful mind,” he said. “They are intentional and malicious, designed to manipulate and harm. Untruths, on the other hand, are like a mistaken map. They may lead people astray, but they are not necessarily malicious.”
The travellers nodded, beginning to understand the difference. Lies were about intentional deception, while untruths were about unintentional mistakes. Lies were a breach of trust, while untruths were an opportunity for correction and growth.
As the travellers continued their journey, they learned to discern between Lies and Untruths. They approached information with a critical eye, verifying facts and sources to avoid being misled. And they treated others with empathy, recognising that untruths can be corrected, while lies require vigilance and discernment.
The tale of the two travelers spread throughout the land, reminding people of the importance of critical thinking and empathy. And the travelers learned to navigate the complex landscape of truth and deception, guided by wisdom and discernment.
