Yorùbá proverbs have remained flawless through the ages because they are distilled wisdom, tested by time and affirmed by experience. They are not mere sayings; they are enduring principles that guide conduct, preserve values, and illuminate the path of life.
Our forebears chose observation as one of the most potent methodologies of inquiry. They watched nature, studied human behaviour, listened to the rhythms of society, and drew lasting conclusions from lived experience. From these careful observations emerged proverbs that have outlived generations and continue to speak with remarkable relevance.
Indeed, Yoruba proverbs are observatory postulations—philosophical conclusions born from the patient observation of life. As the elders say, “Àgbà tó rí ohun tí ọmọ kò rí, bí ọmọ bá gun orí igi tó ga, kò lè rí i.” An elder sees what the youth cannot, even from the top of the tallest tree. Such is the depth of wisdom that observation bequeaths.
When a people faithfully observe life before speaking, their words become timeless. That is why Yoruba proverbs continue to serve as moral compasses, intellectual treasures, and cultural beacons from one generation to another.
Over the years, I have deliberately devoted myself to studying Yoruba proverbs and wise sayings, paying close attention to their meanings in order to deepen my understanding of life and humanity. They have become the guiding principles of my thoughts, decisions, and worldview.
As a traditional leader, I have found this timeless reservoir of indigenous wisdom invaluable. It continually shapes my judgment, enriches my leadership, and reminds me that the wisdom of our ancestors remains a reliable compass for navigating the complexities of the present age.
