Today, December 5, 2024, marks World Volunteer Day, a celebration of the selfless contributions of volunteers worldwide. The International Volunteer Day (IVD) serves as a powerful reminder of the impact volunteering can have on individuals, communities, and society as a whole.
As the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, so eloquently stated:
“Volunteers embody the best of humanity. On this important day, let’s draw inspiration from their example, and resolve to do our part to help shape a better world for all.”
In Nigeria, we still have a long way to go in embracing the culture of volunteering. However, I firmly believe that by working together, we can create a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable future for everyone.
As the Founder/Coordinator of The SixthSense Initiative, I voluntarily commit our organisation to mobilising, training, and equipping Nigerians to cultivate a habit of love and service for others. We will devote our time, resources, and campaign materials to create awareness about the benefits of volunteering and its positive impact on our environment.
Volunteering offers numerous benefits, including:
– Making new friends and connections
– Acquiring new skills and experiences
– Advancing your career and personal growth
– Solving problems and challenges
– Feeling happier, healthier, and more fulfilled
As we celebrate International Volunteer Day, let us remember the importance of working together to create a better world. Let us unite to:
1. Break down barriers and stigma
2. Promote accessible education, employment, and healthcare
3. Foster inclusive communities and societies
4. Ensure equal rights and opportunities for all
Together, we can build a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable future for everyone!
In my message to Nigerians, let us be our brother’s keeper through selfless service and volunteering. Let us work together to create a better society, where genuine leadership is committed to humanity.
